Description
A clove flower is the dried flower bud from the clove tree (Syzygium aromaticum), native to the Maluku Islands (Spice Islands) in Indonesia. The flower buds are harvested before they bloom and are then sun-dried to turn into the dark brown spice commonly known as clove. The fresh clove flower is pink or pale green, but during drying, it becomes hard, brown, and takes on its characteristic shape, resembling small nails.
Clove flowers are rich in essential oils, primarily eugenol, which is responsible for their strong aroma and medicinal properties. While the dried buds are commonly used as a spice in cooking, clove flowers have also been used in traditional medicine for their antiseptic and analgesic properties.
In its natural form, the clove tree produces clusters of these small flowers, each made up of four petals tightly wrapped around a central structure that will eventually turn into the spice we know as clove. The flowers have a sweet, slightly pungent aroma when fresh.
